Automated Rotterdam Terminal Could Result In Fewer Direct Calls To UK Ports

by | Oct 31, 2022

Developments are underway for an automated, 5 deep sea berth terminal in Rotterdam.

The terminal, jointly agreed by Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) and MSC subsidiary Terminal Investment Limited (TIL) can be expected in 2027 and will add 7m teu of annual capacity.

The fully automated terminal will replicate Europe Container Terminals (ECT) which opened in 1993, and see vessels unloaded by autonomous cranes and cabin-less ground vehicles.

Although an automated service would ease a currently stressed supply chain through controlling traffic and trade flow, increasing productivity, capacity and enabling ports to be more reactive to short time demands and scenarios, only 10% of ports are fully automated and the bold move doesn’t come without its challenges, largely cost.

Here at UniOcean, direct calls to the UK will always be our core offering both now and in the future.
